Water, Energy, Carbon: Numbers Per Stage or Not at All
Sustainability reporting in apparel manufacturing has a credibility problem of its own making: factory-level averages. Total water divided by total pieces produces a number that satisfies a form and informs nobody, because it blends a waterless cutting room with a dyehouse that drinks thousands of liters a batch. The number that changes decisions is consumption per stage, and factories already hold most of what computing it requires.
Where the resources actually go
The verticals differ by an order of magnitude, and knowing that reshapes priorities. Water in a knit factory is overwhelmingly a dyehouse story: bath after bath at the liquor ratio, so a 400 kg batch at 1:8 with its pretreatment, dyeing, and wash-off baths moves tens of thousands of liters. Energy splits differently: thermal load (steam for dyeing, drying, finishing) usually dominates electrical (spinning and sewing motors, compressors, lighting). Chemicals are almost entirely wet processing. A factory that knows only its totals will chase lighting retrofits while the dyehouse's liquor ratio quietly outweighs every LED in the building.
Attribution is arithmetic you already have
Per-stage numbers do not require a wall of meters on day one. The dyehouse's water follows from records that exist: batches run, their sizes, their liquor ratios, their bath counts, the liquor ratio math applied per batch. Steam follows from the same batch log; chemical consumption from recipes actually executed. Metering refines these figures later; the batch-derived version is already honest enough to rank problems and to notice that a month of poor right-first-time performance shows up as a water and energy spike, because every re-dye repeats the whole resource stack.
The same records feed the passport
The convergence worth noticing: the batch and lot records that produce honest per-stage figures are the same records the Digital Product Passport era will draw on. Environmental facts per product are per-stage facts allocated along the lot chain. A factory that builds stage-level resource truth now is simultaneously doing its cost engineering, its effluent planning, and its compliance groundwork, one discipline with three payoffs, which is the only kind of sustainability program that survives a hard season.
