Carton Math, Container Math, and the Cost of Air
The last arithmetic a garment meets before it leaves the factory is carton math, and it is arithmetic with teeth: get it slightly wrong and freight is bought for air, cartons burst on the third stack, or a container sails one third empty at full price. None of it is hard. All of it has to be done before the packing starts, not discovered at the door.
The carton is a contract
Buyers specify pack rules: assortment per carton, pieces per polybag, carton weight ceilings (often 15 to 20 kg for handling rules), sometimes the box dimensions themselves. Within those rules the factory still owns real decisions. The classic silent error is volumetric: a light, bulky pack (fleece, padded jackets) hits the volume limit long before the weight limit, and a factory quoting freight by weight alone has mispriced the shipment.
Container math before booking
A 20-foot container holds about 28 cubic meters of honest stowage, a 40-foot about 58, a 40 high-cube about 68. The pieces per container tool chains pack size through carton dimensions to answer the question the merchandiser actually has: does this order fit one forty, or two twenties, or one forty plus an awkward remainder? The container utilization view is the follow-up discipline: booked space versus stowed cargo, order by order. Utilization below about 85 percent on repeated shipments is a standing invoice for shipping air, and the fix is usually carton dimensioning, not heroics at the port.
Decide at order intake
All of this math is available the day the order is confirmed: pack rules, garment weights from the sample, carton dimensions from the spec. Run it then and the consequences are choices, adjust the carton, consolidate shipments, quote the buyer the real freight. Run it at packing week and the consequences are facts. It is the same principle that governs reading capacity before committing: the cheap moment to do the arithmetic is before the promise, and it is the same handful of numbers either way.
